Keith Beck, PhD, Director
Dr. Beck is the department head for Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science (TECS) in the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University. He has a PhD in organic chemistry from Purdue University and his research emphasizes dyebath monitoring, liquid chromatographic analysis of textile materials, textile applications of near-infrared spectroscopy, and the use of liquid and supercritical CO2 for textile cleaning, dyeing and analysis.
Steve Markham, PhD, Director
Dr. Markham has co-founded several high-tech ventures since 1994, including, LipoScience, Inc., LIPSinc, and Kyma Technologies. Dr. Markham has refined business plans, hired senior management, and served on Boards of Directors and as Chief Financial Officer. He is an associate professor in the Department of Business Management at NC State University and specializes in high-tech entrepreneurship and product development. He also serves on the executive committee of the Product Development and Management Association.
Michael Zapata, Director
Mr. Zapata specializes in the management of technology, including entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial venturing activities. He has been involved in the commercialization of electronic materials, RNA, plant genetics, software, and medical devices. He is CEO of ArrayXpress, a biotech spin-out from NC State University and serves on the Board of Directors at two technology companies. Mr. Zapata has directed strategic planning for new product lines and opened lines of business for clients such as GE, Seimens, CSMI and Nortel. A proven leader, he is a combat aviation officer in the North Carolina Army National Guard, flying Apache helicopters. He earned a Master of Science in Management from North Carolina State University.
Nelson Houser, Director
Mr. Houser is Vice President, Technical Services for M. Dohmen USA, a leading dye development company. A graduate of NC State College of Textiles in 1967 with a B.S. in Textile Chemistry, Mr. Houser served in various technical management positions with Burlington Industries, GAF, American Color and Chemical, and Ciba. An active member of AATCC and past president, he was recognized by NC State University College of Textiles as the 2000 Leader of the Year, Textile World Annual Top 10 in 2001 for service and dedication to the textile industry, and the 2002 AATCC Chapin Award for Service.
Jerry Rowland, Director
Mr. Rowland is Vice President of Global Yarn and Textile Strategy for Hanesbrands Incorporated. He was president and CEO of National Textiles and a primary owner until it was acquired by Sara Lee Branded Apparel in 2005. He has been at the forefront of textile innovation for two decades, integrating new technology and management philosophies into his operations. Mr. Rowland was responsible for building the United State’s first totally automated ring spinning mill, incorporating self-directed work teams into the operation. He also played a key role in developing the first continuous circular knit finishing range with Tube-Tex in 1987. He has served in leadership positions in various cotton and textile industry associations and is presently on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the National Cotton Council, the Board of the Directors of the National Council of Textile Operations and the Board of Directors of the N.C. State Textile Foundation.
Russell Thomas, CEO
Mr. Thomas has a Master of Technology for International Development from NC State University and is Interim Director for Executive Programs in the College of Management at NC State. His area of expertise is technology entrepreneurship and commercialization for new-to-the-world products targeted at business markets. Mr. Thomas has business development experience involving early stage bootstrap and turnaround ventures, and consulting experience in spin-outs from Fortune 500 firms and universities. Mr. Thomas’s background also includes experience in operations and supply chain management as Director of Inventory Control at Variety Wholesalers where he was responsible for forecasting company sales, developing inventory management plans and managing the auto-replenishment and rebuy systems for two distribution centers.
